For the first time in his baseball career, Emilio Gonzalez (Nova Southeastern) stepped into the batter’s box with a walk-off opportunity.
The moment seemed tailor-made for the third-year Big Train star on Opening Night of the 2026 Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League season.
With the winning run in scoring position at second base, Gonzalez kept his composure at the plate. He watched the first two pitches, waited for one he could handle, and hammered a single into the gap in left-center.
Gonzalez’s walk-off completed a dramatic six-run comeback and lifted Bethesda to a 12-11 victory over the Silver Spring Takoma-Thunderbolts on Tuesday night.
The first baseman entered the summer cemented as one of the most accomplished players in Cal Ripken Sr. League history.
After winning the league’s first-ever Triple Crown last year and helping lead the Big Train to back-to-back league championships in 2024 and 2025, Gonzalez returned as a cornerstone of Bethesda’s offense.
“I bring leadership. If I need to step up, I will,” Gonzalez said. “I’ve been here for three years, I know what I have to do and what is expected of me.”
Last season was nothing short of historic.
The slugger became the first in Ripken Sr. League history to capture the regular-season batting Triple Crown, leading the league in batting average (.418), home runs (5), and runs batted in (41). His .418 average tied for the fifth-highest mark in league history, earning him both Cal Ripken Sr. League Most Outstanding Hitter honors and Big Train MVP recognition.
Just one year earlier, Gonzalez established himself as one of the league’s premier hitters, earning Big Train’s Most Outstanding Hitter honors after batting .337 during the 2024 season.
Upon his return to Bethesda this summer, expectations are high. Tuesday’s opener suggested that Gonzalez is more than capable of meeting them again.
His game-winning hit capped a 2-for-5 evening with two RBIs and a walk. Earlier in the contest, he drove in a run during Bethesda’s three-run fifth inning as the Big Train chipped away at an early deficit.
Silver-Spring Takoma erupted for five runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to build an 8-2 lead.
The Thunderbolts stretched their advantage to 11-6 after Jonathan Acosta (North Florida) whacked a two-run double in the seventh inning. Bethesda responded.
The Big Train scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game alive. TJ Gramesty (Florida Atlantic) drew a bases-loaded walk, Julius Bagnerise (George Mason) reached on an error that plated two runs, and Daniel Machado (Florida Atlantic) delivered a game-tying RBI walk to erase the deficit.
“We fought and took advantage of their mistakes,” Gonzalez said.
Meanwhile, Kyzer Smith (Florida Atlantic) slammed the door for Bethesda. After loading the bases at the top of the eighth, Smith escaped the jam and tossed two scoreless innings, setting the stage for the ninth.
Brennon Wright (South Alabama) reached on an infield single and advanced to second to get the rally started for the green team.
With two outs and the winning run in scoring position, the pressure shifted to the Thunderbolts. A wild pitch moved Wright to third, as Gonzalez stepped into the driver’s seat to complete the 12-11 comeback victory.
“I was up 2-0 in the count when he threw me that fastball, and I hammered it,” Gonzalez said. Put a good swing on it.”
The ball was lined into the gap in left-center to close out the evening. The Florida native reminded everyone why he has become a franchise legend.
